WOOLWORTHS TO OPEN IN AIRLIE NEXT WEEK
SHELVES are being stacked and the doors are almost ready to open at Airlie’s brand new Woolworths store which will be unveiled to the public next Tuesday night.
Store manager Darren Rusk said the opening event from 6-9pm would include speeches, ribbon cutting and a ceremonial cake as well as ambient music by a local performer, an Airlie Beach-style fashion show and the performance of three songs by the Cannonvale State School choir.
Mr Rusk, a Woolworths employee of more than 20 years, moved here in November with his wife and two children who are now enrolled at Cannonvale State School.
Mr Rusk is one of about 60 staff at the new Airlie Beach store with some moving across from Woolworths’ Cannonvale store at Centro and more than 30 new jobs filled locally.
Construction started on the store almost a year ago with Hutchinson Builders contracted to deliver the project.
Mr Rusk said the end result was a brand new building with about 180 car parking spaces and 16 check- outs including a mixture of regular, self-serve and express services. He said he was looking forward to the opening event next week and he ex- pected the community reaction to be very positive.
“I just think everyone’s excited - I walked down the street talking to the shop owners yesterday and everyone said they can’t wait,” he said.
“And I’m also looking forward to meeting the local people and help- ing build our ties to the community. ”
The new store is located off Waterson Way.
