Cannons ready for carnival

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

THE Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club is gearing up to host their annual swimming carnival at the Cannonvale State School pool this weekend.

The event was cancelled in January due to the severe weather caused by Cyclone Dylan crossing the coastline and all club members are hoping for clear skies to continue this Saturday and Sunday.

The annual event attracts more than 140 swimmers from across North Queensland for two-days of competitive racing.

Gates will open at 8am for warm-up on Saturday, with racing to start at 9am.

On Sunday, warm-up will be held from 7am with racing to kick off at 8am.

Club vice president Estelle Van Zyl said the skins event was an exciting time for competitors with $2680 in cash prizes across the 12 and under and 13 and over divisions.

There will be races in all four strokes with the six fastest swimmers over 25m for each stroke qualifying to compete in the skins race.

“It’s sudden death with the last swimmer to touch the wall eliminated and the others going back to the start line until the last two are left standing,” Van Zyl said.

“The overall winner in the 13 and over group will receive $70 cash and the winner in the 12 and under will take home $40 cash.”

All swimmers competing in the skins event will receive a cash prize.

The first round of the skins event will kick off with the 25m backstroke at approximately 11am on Saturday.

Coaches Mark Erickson and Ken Crittenden are very excited to host the event.

Many new members to the Cannons are also looking forward to competing in their first carnival of the year. Jordan and Angus Menzies, Jackman Romanella, Dylan Barbeler, Piper O’Grady, Ivan Van Zyl, Natalie Milne and Emma Hogan are among those travelling to compete in the school state championships in Brisbane from Monday, March 24-29.

NEW MEMBERS: Abbi O'Sheehy, Nyrie Stevenson, Gareth O'Sheehy, Fraser Duguid, Jacob Stevenson, Daisy Neil, Sam Dodds, Mikhaila Flint and Jy Parkinson are looking forward to competing for the first time in the Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Carnival on the weekend.
