Locals take on 12-week Fight Night challenge
THE third instalment of the Airlie Beach Fight Night is underway, with three new fighters stepping up to take on the epic 12-week challenge.
Cannonvale resident Scott Dwyer will be boxing on the night and cutting down to compete in 77kg weight division.
It will be the 43-year-old’s first time in the ring, which is an experience he said he wanted to achieve “before age catches up with me”.
Matt Sehl relocated from Brisbane to the Whitsundays three months and was told about the 12-week challenge by Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Kane Hober.
The 26-year-old tradesman immediately signed up for the challenge and will be fighting in an MMA bout at 84kg.
“I’m pretty tired and sore at the moment but I’m following the routine closely and can’t wait to step into the ring in another nine weeks,” he said.
The final fighter to round out the three is 18-year-old maintenance worker Dylan Grundy who will be weighing in at 70kg for his MMA fight.
He has been living in the Whitsundays for the past two years and wanted to get involved in all the action af- ter watching the last Airlie Fight Night on November.
“The tranformation of fighters in the last 12-week challenge was insane and it’s really helpful training with guys who have already stepped into the ring,” he said.
“I can’t wait to experience it for myself.”
Whitsunday Martial Arts coach Dan Zealand said all 12-week challenge contestants were training five nights per week in strength and conditioning and basic skills training with a hard sparring session every Saturday.
“We have really thrown them into the deep end and they aren’t shying away from it so I’m excited to see what 12-weeks will bring out of them,” he said.
This time around there will be 12 epic bouts of MMA and boxing but Zealand said interest was growing so that number could increase.
In the main card event, Zealand will take on a fierce competitor from Rockhampton in what is expected to be an intense, jaw-dropping bout of MMA.
The co-main event is yet to be announced.
Airlie Fight Night will be held at the Whitsunday PCYC on Saturday, May 24.
