Raiders take on Bowen for Magee’s Trophy this Friday
THE defending premiers of the 2013 Mackay District Rugby Union (MDRU) competition, the Proserpine Whitsunday Raiders will be taking on the Bowen Mudcrabs in a highly anticipated pre-season clash this Friday night.
Teams will be made up of both A and reserve grade players who will be taking to the field of the Green Energy Whitsunday Sports Park for a 7.30pm kick off.
There is a strong yet friendly-rivalry between the two sides and all players are keen to take home the bragging rights of the Magee Trophy.
It will be an important game for former All Black and new coach of the Raiders, Isitolo Maka, who will be analysing the performance of all players from the sideline.
The Mudcrabs finished fourth in the 2013 MDRU reserve grade competition and are keen to have a hit out against the defending premiers.
Club representative Peter Chengody said the match would be a great event for spectators wanting to kick off their weekend with some thrilling, local rugby union action.
“Bowen was coming home really strong at the end of the 2013 season and they deserved a place in the final against the Raiders, who went on to win both reserve and A grade premiership,” he said.
“It’s going to be a great match to watch as both teams are keen to get back into the competition.”
Chengody said the boys had been training well on Wednesday and Friday night and hoped to see all players at the match.
Spectators are encouraged to make the most of the club’s new sideline seating and the canteen will have hot and cold food and refreshments available for purchase.
Entry is free to the sports park and local supporters are encouraged to attend the Friday night match with a great kick off time of 7.30pm. The first round of the MDRU competition will be held on May 3.
