Great fishing around rockwalls

Whitsunday Times - - REELIN’ IN -

THE dam has been fishing consistently lately, with both casting and trolling finding their mark.

Lots of fish seem to be getting caught casting the trees lining the old creek beds. Target the areas where the rain pushes the fresh water down the old creeks and into the dam, as the barra chase bait in the runoff.

There are plenty of crabs about, so it’s worth chasing them as the tides start to build. Careful throwing pots into the running current during large tides, as they may be taken by the tide.

Target barra around the runoffs as they chase the bait coming in from the flood plains.

The Whitsunday Sailing Club rockwalls are fishing well, with reports of small trout and spangled emperor being caught.

Cannonvale Beach is a good place to take the family at the moment, as good numbers of whiting are being caught, as well as prawns caught inthe shallow flats.

There are some Spanish mackerel about, in the Hook Passage and around Hayman Island. As the water temperature changes, the number of Spanish should improve as we move towards mackerel season mid-year.

Look out for schools of longtail tuna jumping about also.

There was some excellent fishing at the reef last weekend, with plenty of bottom dwellers and surface fish taken.

There were some good catches of Spanish mackerel, with some quality sizes between 10-15kg reported.

This weekend should also provide some good reef fishing conditions, and the making tides to the new moon should see plenty of surface fish feeding.
