Hamo to host race

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

SAILORS from across the region are preparing to take part in this weekend’s Hamilton Island Cup.

Hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Hamilton Island (CYCHI) the series incorporates two windward/ leeward races off Catseye Beach on Saturday and a race around Henning Island on Sunday.

Social events including a spit roast and barbeque, live entertainment by local musicians and a $500 cash prize raffle.

Event organiser Barnaby Thomas said the Hamilton Island Cup was an allinclusive community event “aimed at promoting sailing and the awesome area we have to sail in”.

“The Whitsunday islands are one of the best backdrops to any sailing event in the world [and] as a community, we should be out there celebrating this,” he said.

“There is no other event like this on the island and it is a great opportunity for locals to celebrate the region in this quiet time of year.”

Entry costs $150 per participating boat and this fee incudes a marina berth.

Mr Thomas said the CYCHI was looking to donate to a charity in the region and give something back if there were any profits from the event.

Entries will be accepted until 9am on Saturday, March 29.
