Students sail to victory in multi-school event
STUDENTS from four Whitsunday schools proved themselves capable sailors at a regatta in Townsville last weekend.
Brendan Hoffman and Josh Towle from the Whitsunday Christian College, Jasmine Tickle from St Catherine's Catholic College, Eva Lorenz from Proserpine State High School and Lachie McConnell and Aiden Gummow from the Bowen State High School, formed the Whitsunday Schools Teams Racing Squad, which competed in round two of a three-regatta series hosted by the Townsville Sailing Club.
The Whitsunday students were among 13 teams from as far afield as Atherton, Tully, Cairns and Townsville.
Teams were divided into gold and silver divi- sions with training on Saturday and racing all day on Sunday.
The Whitsunday team competed in the silver division and finished the day undefeated after seven races.
An unofficial race was also run between the winner of the gold division (Pimlico A) and the Whitsunday team, who suffered their first loss but only after some of the best racing of the day.
Whitsunday coach Colin Melvin from St Catherine's Catholic College said he was extremely proud of the team’s performance.
The students said their goal for next year was to compete in the complete series, the winner of which represents North Queensland in the National Teams Racing Championship.
