Riders set for QLD supermoto champs
SOME of the region’s best road racing and supermoto enthusiasts were in action at the Whitsunday Raceway for a practice day on Sunday.
The practice event saw the highly anticipated return of quad bike riders from throughout the region who are hoping to get enough numbers to register a class in the Australian Supermoto Championships in June.
Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) member Ashley Murphy said quad riders from Mackay, Collinsville, Ayr and Sarina travelled to the Whitsundays for the practice day.
“We normally race flat track but it was awesome to have a crack at the combined bitumen and dirt track of the Whitsunday Raceway,” he said.
“It’s a more physical track and requires significantly more effort to get around the technical corners but it was a great experience overall.”
The WMSC has put up their hand to host round one of the Queensland Supermoto Titles next weekend from April 4-6, with a supermoto practice day to be held on the Friday.
WMSC commitee members have been working around the clock to get what will be a memorable weekend for all riders and spectators off the ground. The vocalist of motorsports Scotty McKellar will be commentating on all the action over the course of the weekend.
Troy Bayliss, Chris Vermeulen, Jason Crump and Gary McCoy are rumored to be attending the championships which will be the perfect warm-up for the Australian Supermoto Championships from June 13-15.
Injury forced Beau Laing out of the 2013 Australian Supermoto Championships only a couple of months before the big race, but he is now back racing and hoping to secure a podium finish.
Jarrod Koppe will also be returning from injury and performed well at the club’s practice day on the weekend.
Recent upgrades to the Whitsunday Raceway have seen a new surface spread along the dirt section and the installation of a shaded viewing hill at canteen corner will offer spectators unrestricted views of the entire track.
Round two of the Queensland Supermoto Championships will be held in far North Queensland at the Mako Track in Mareeba on September 12.
