QUEENSLAND SUPERMOTO TITLES THIS WEEKEND
MEMBERS of the Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) have been working around the clock to bring round one of the Queensland Supermoto Titles to the Whitsundays this Saturday and Sunday.
2013 Troy Bayliss Classic winner Michael Kirkness, Chris Vermeulen, Troy Bayliss, Jason Crump and Gary McCoy will be some of the big names making up the star-studded line-up of riders competing in various classes over the course of the weekend.
The vocalist of motorsports Scotty Kellar will also be returning to the microphone to provide his entertaining commentary on all the action.
A practice event will be held for all riders on Friday, with two days of highly competitive racing to kick off on Saturday and Sunday at 10am.
Riders will determine their grid positions through their qualifying times at the practice event.
Injury forced Beau Laing out of the 2013 Australian Supermoto Championships but he was back in action for a practice day at the Whitsunday Raceway last Friday.
This Queensland Supermoto Titles will be his first competitive race since September last year and he has his eyes set on a podium finish.
“Now that I have done a few laps on the track I’m starting to feel really good about competing this weekend,” he said.
“The raceway is a much shorter track with more tight and technical turns than I’m used too but I’m sure spectators will enjoy watching riders sliding and backing it in around the corners.”
Laing will be competing in the S2 and S3 classes on his TM450 and TM530.
Townsville’s Jarrod Koppe is also returning from injury and will be competing in the S2 class.
“I’m keen to get back on the track and my number one aim is to stay on the bike,” he said with a laugh.
The Whitsunday Raceway had a number of recent upgrades which included a shaded viewing hill at canteen corner to give spectators unrestricted views of the entire track.
WMSC president Andrew Auld said so long as there wasn’t torrential rain the event would be going ahead this weekend.
He encouraged spectators to attend the event and said the canteen would be serving a range of food and refreshments all weekend.
Round two of the Queensland Supermoto Titles will be held in far north Queensland at the Mako Track in Mareeba on September 12.
