Coun­cil cel­e­brates Na­tional Youth Week

WHIT­SUN­DAY Re­gional Coun­cil Mayor Jenny Whit­ney said Na­tional Youth Week (NYW) was the largest cel­e­bra­tion of young people in Aus­tralia.

“Thou­sands of young people aged 12-25 from across Aus­tralia get in­volved in NYW each year, which runs from April 4-13,” she said.

“The theme for Na­tional Youth Week 2014 is ‘Our Voice. Our Im­pact.’ It was cho­sen by the young mem­bers of the Na­tional Plan­ning Group fol­low­ing broad con­sul­ta­tion with young people from across Aus­tralia.

“There are lots of ac­tion packed free ac­tiv­i­ties for youth in the whole Whit­sun­day area hosted by the Whit­sun­day and Bowen PCYC’s, Proser­pine Youthspace and Collinsville Youth Coali­tion.

“Lo­cally, the week will also fea­ture dance par­ties in­clud­ing the new idance sys­tem, laser skir­mish, tie dy­ing, games tour­na­ments, ex­cur­sions to the fire sta­tion and a com­mu­nity event in Proser­pine ‘Con­nect 2014’ brought to you by Coun­cils Youth Com­mit­tee Y Fac­tor.

The Con­nect 2014 is a free com­mu­nity event in Proser­pine dur­ing Na­tional Youth Week. It will be held on Wed­nes­day, April 9 from 10am-4pm at the Unit­ing Church Hall, Proser­pine.

The pos­i­tive men­tal health mini expo is open to ev­ery­one in the com­mu­nity and will pro­vide in­for­ma­tion on lo­cal sup­port ser­vices, vol­un­teer or­ga­ni­za­tions and recre­ational op­por­tu­ni­ties to sup­port good men­tal health.

There will be en­ter­tain­ment, mu­sic, kids games, a sausage siz­zle cour­tesy of Proser­pine Lions and a Zumba Fit­ness dis­play.
