Whitsunday Times - - COMMUNITY NEWS -

LOCAL youth with an eye for design are being called on to create original pieces of sun safe fashion for the chance to win a mentorship with international fashion designer Juli Grbac.

The competition is part of a new Queensland Government campaign Project SPF – Stay Pretty Forever.

The campaign, which aims to get young women thinking about protecting their skin, has attracted the interest of Australian fashion designer Juli Grbac, Australia’s Next Top Model finalist Liz Braithwaite, fashion stylist Laura SteadChurchill and Michelle Doherty from Alpha-H skincare.

Also on board are founders of Sabo Skirt, Thessy and Yiota Kouzoukas, fashion director of The Style Creeper Nyla Jade and Bespecd eyewear designer Tracey Cruickshank.

Using their combined influence, the Project SPF collective will promote sun safe living and re-affirm the “health is beauty” message through social media and fashion spreads.

The Project SPF design competition is one way the campaign will engage young women and spread the message that you can still be stylish and sun safe.

New York based fashion designer and winner of Project Runway Australia (season 1), Juli Grbac, said it was great to be able to use her fashion influence to contribute to a good cause.

“I’m really excited to see what our aspiring fashion designers come up with to meet this brief,” she said.

“I’m hoping this competition will help young women to think more about the dangers of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and what exposure can lead to.”

Ms Grbac said protecting our skin from the sun was an important measure to prevent skin cancer and encouraged youth to achieve it through fashion.

Aspiring young Queenslanders can read the brief and enter the design competition via the Project SPF Facebook page www.facebook.com/ProjectSPF.
