Raiders ready for Canefields to Coalfields clash
THE Proserpine Whitsunday Raiders will be packing their bags this weekend as they prepare for the Canefields to Coalfields tournament in Moranbah.
The round robin event will see 12 teams from the Mackay region and Central Highlands taking to the field on Saturday for an almighty battle of the fittest to help raise funds for the Moranbah’s clubhouse which burnt down in the off-season.
There will be 15-players a side in the competition with the first round kicking off at midday.
The first game for the Raiders will be held at 2pm, but all players are required at the field no later than 1pm. Club representative Peter Chengody said the Raiders were proud to offer their support to the club.
“It’s been a long time since we have been to Moranbah and the boys are looking forward to rubbing shoulders with them once again,” he said.
“The first round of the competition is now less than a month away and they need the match fitness. It will be a good opportunity for them to work out the cobwebs.”
A barbarian finale will be held be- tween the two regions to end what will be an action-packed day of hard hitting rugby union.
The event will serve as the perfect warm-up for all players, before the club’s first round in the Mackay District Rugby Union Competition on May, 1.
All players are required to attend training at the Whitsunday Sports Park on Friday night at 6pm.
The Raiders are hoping to organise transport for players and will be departing from the clubhouse at 8am on Saturday.
Transportation details will be confirmed on Friday night at training. For more information, contact club president Matt Sammut on 0447 082 920.
