Ladies celebrate Presidents and Members Day
TUESDAY was an enjoyable day for the ladies at the Airlie Beach Bowls Club who held their presidents and members day.
Even the disastrous weather could not dampen the spirits or enthusiasm of the ladies from around the district who arrived mostly by bus from Mackay and Proserpine.
The ladies enjoyed an hour and ten minutes of play before the rain became too heavy forcing those on the green to adjourn inside.
The bowls winners and runners up for the day were Lynda Leyshon, Shirley Wesche, Thelma Johnson and Robyn Devereau with a score of nine.
Runners-up were Pam Pratt, Sue Hunter, Janet Mortimer and Mavis Bryan who came in at a close second with their score of eight.
Unfortunately, the Airlie Beach ladies were not successful in the bowls arena but excelled in their hospitality by providing an excellent lunch.
The event organisers thanked all clubs in attendance including Seaforth, Northern Beaches, Proserpine, Mackay, South Suburban, Pioneer Valley, North Mackay, Sarina, St Helen’s, Marian, Bowen, Mackay City and representatives from the Mackay District Ladies Bowls Club.
The wet weather on Wednesday stopped all bowls from being played, although one of the keenest members Nik Fernbach, got in a couple of hours of practice.
Business house bowls decider for series 11 was also cancelled due to weather.
Thursday night was wet but the Cruise Whitsunday staff get together didn’t need bowls to make it successful as a great time was had by all.
The police social club also enjoyed a good celebration together on Friday night.
A chance to play bowls returned to Airlie Beach on Sunday and the regular group of social bowlers made the most of the clear conditions.
They played two games of pairs and one game of triples.
The winning pair’s team of Doreen Whitehouse and Eric Bottle easily defeated Wally Gray and Nik Fernbach 15-5, while Richard Whitehouse and Steve Tattam defeated Bruce Purdie and Domenico Sposato 13-7.
Triples winners were Konna Jewell, Maureen Barnard and Margo Stanley who claimed victory over Konna Jewell (double lead), Ladda Purdie and Kevin Jewell 13-8.
The last round of business house bowls was played last night, and the winning team will be announced in next week’s paper.
