New members excel in regatta

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

OUTRIGGER Whitsunday travelled to Yeppoon on the weekend to compete in the second regatta of the season.

The first regatta was to be held in the Whitsundays, however Tropical Cyclone Hadi forced the committee to cancel the event.

For many paddlers, this was their first competition.

Katie Pickford and Cassandra Doblo came third in the open women 6km OC2.

Nick Bellinger and Blair Mitchell came second in open men 6km OC2 and Ashleigh Suchanek and Nathan Ponmoon came an impressive second in the under-19’s 6km OC2.

The club was well represented with three OC6 teams, with the senior master men, master women and open men competing in the 20km OC6 marathon.

Junior crews wowed the crowd with their achievements.

In the under-14, Molly Lynes, Ashlee Coyte, Ashton Joyce, Casey Norder, Saharrah Tyler-Crane and Vania Erhnst came third in the OC6 2km marathon and 500m sprint, while Courtney and Tyson Joyce came first in the under-19 6km OC2.

The newly formed under-16 girls crew, consisting of Ashleigh Suchanek, Courtney Joyce, Holly Coyte, Tyler Huson, Yemi Ehrnst, and Brooke Draper had a great result, coming third in the 6km OC6 marathon.

Seasoned paddlers Michelle Lynes and Carmen Bekker did the club proud, coming first and second in the senior master women 5km OC1.

With the arrival of a new OC6 Kamanu, a lighter weight canoe, the club has been able to remain competitive and recently it was announced that Abell Point Marina would be a major sponsor.

Coach Adam Joyce was thrilled with the results.

“Overall, it was an excellent weekend. It was good to see everyone giving it their best and it was terrific to see the new paddlers competing in their first races”.
