Pennants season starts Saturday
THERE was some great bowls played on Saturday, with the semi-finals in the morning for the club championship singles.
Ben Cutrone defeated Wayne Handley 25-20 in what appeared to be an even game until the 23rd end when Cutrone scored a 4 to overtake Handley.
Dean Lovelock defeated Scott Kinnear 25-21, when Lovelock got an early lead with Kinnear almost leveling the score several times before the magic number of 25 was reached in the 29th end and time had run out.
In the afternoon, the club championship final was played, and it was a closely contested game between Cutrone and Lovelock, with Lovelock winning 25-23 after 33 ends.
On Sunday afternoon, about 20 players enjoyed the bowling. There were some new faces getting a taster of the game, and the club hoped they enjoyed the experience and will be back again soon.
Jeanette Calway, Reg Russell and Kevin Thorogood defeated Fran Porter, John Henderson and Gail Camm 21-15. Jackson Gray, Patrick Camm, Nick Watson and Matthew Camm defeated Nichole Noonan/Gabriella Camm/Desley Camm, John Lahney, Rodney Camm and Philip Brown 2415. Jo Peasley, Arthur Williams and Heather Brown defeated Trudy Hanne, Dot Hinschen and Barry Zillmann 25-22.
This week, the Sunday trophy went to the team with the least number of ends won, which was was Philip Brown’s team.
On the weekend, the Mackay Dis- trict side which included Michael Kinnear and Barry Saroglia from Proserpine, was victorious in the Northern Challenge played at Townsville, so Mackay District retains the trophy for another year.
The 2014 pennants start this weekend. In round one Division 1 plays Northern Beaches at Northern Beaches on Saturday afternoon while Division 4 plays Mackay at Proserpine. In round two, Division 1 plays Mackay at home with Division 4 playing Northern Beaches at Northern Beaches. Good luck and good bowls to all players.
The selectors have picked the teams to compete in round 1 and 2 of the pennants to play this weekend.
Division 1 will see Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kinnear, Barry Saroglia, Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton, Graeme Kinnear, Michael Kinnear, Wayne Handley, John Bye, Gavin Milne and Shane Spann playing.
Division 4 includes Martin Corr, Dale Haack, Barry Zillman, Shane Kinnear, Phil Brown, Matthew Camm, Dean Lovelock, Todd Marshall
John Henderson, Robbie Taylor, Kevin Thorogood and Vince Olsen.
Reserves include Jim Quod, Steve Laurie, Todd Leys, Dan Robinson, Sandy Daffara, Ted Cullen, Ross Reville, Shane May, Arthur Williams, John Lahney and Reg Russell.
The bus will not be ready for this weekend, so all players should make their own arrangments to get to Mackay.
LADIES Wednesday saw the start of the club championship pairs competition. Janet Mortimer and Lois Read defeated Joyce Patullo and Joy Jeffries 27-18 in a game that was closely contested. June Blair and Heather Brown defeated Flo O’Hanlon and Heather Patullo 41-5. Blair and Brown got off to a flying start, not allowing O’Hanlon and Patullo to get the length of green or to settle into their rhythm.
In social play Norma Daniels, Dot Hinschen and Lillian Harris defeated May Davy, Trudy Hanne, Arthur Williams and Gail Camm 20-17 and Pauline Spruce, Fran Porter, Jo Peasley and Barbara Dammash defeated Darrell Patullo, Cathy Holmes, John Lahney and Maree Daffara 17-14.
Yesterday, saw Jo Peasley and Joan McGrath play Carlie Albertson and Maree Daffara in a game of club championship pairs and Amy Hart played Lois Read, marker Barbara Dammash and Janet Mortimer against Joy Jeffries, marker Dot Hinschen in the club championship singles.
Next week on Wednesday, April 16 will be the final of the club championship fours. Janet Mortimer, Fran Porter, June Blair and Heather Brown will play Jo Peasley, Flo O’Hanlon, Lois Read and Joan McGrath. The following Wednesday will be the second semi-final of the club championship pairs, which will see the winner of the Joan McGrath/ Maree Daffara game against Janet Mortimer and Lois Read.
The next committee meeting is Monday, April 14 at 2pm.
