Pen­nants sea­son starts Satur­day

PROSER­PINE BOWLS

THERE was some great bowls played on Satur­day, with the semi-fi­nals in the morn­ing for the club cham­pi­onship sin­gles.

Ben Cutrone de­feated Wayne Han­d­ley 25-20 in what ap­peared to be an even game un­til the 23rd end when Cutrone scored a 4 to over­take Han­d­ley.

Dean Love­lock de­feated Scott Kin­n­ear 25-21, when Love­lock got an early lead with Kin­n­ear al­most lev­el­ing the score sev­eral times be­fore the magic num­ber of 25 was reached in the 29th end and time had run out.

In the af­ter­noon, the club cham­pi­onship fi­nal was played, and it was a closely con­tested game be­tween Cutrone and Love­lock, with Love­lock win­ning 25-23 af­ter 33 ends.

On Sun­day af­ter­noon, about 20 play­ers en­joyed the bowl­ing. There were some new faces get­ting a taster of the game, and the club hoped they en­joyed the ex­pe­ri­ence and will be back again soon.

Jeanette Cal­way, Reg Rus­sell and Kevin Thoro­good de­feated Fran Porter, John Hen­der­son and Gail Camm 21-15. Jack­son Gray, Patrick Camm, Nick Wat­son and Matthew Camm de­feated Ni­c­hole Noo­nan/Gabriella Camm/Des­ley Camm, John Lah­ney, Rod­ney Camm and Philip Brown 2415. Jo Peasley, Arthur Wil­liams and Heather Brown de­feated Trudy Hanne, Dot Hin­schen and Barry Zill­mann 25-22.

This week, the Sun­day tro­phy went to the team with the least num­ber of ends won, which was was Philip Brown’s team.

On the weekend, the Mackay Dis- trict side which in­cluded Michael Kin­n­ear and Barry Saroglia from Proser­pine, was vic­to­ri­ous in the North­ern Chal­lenge played at Townsville, so Mackay District re­tains the tro­phy for an­other year.

The 2014 pen­nants start this weekend. In round one Di­vi­sion 1 plays North­ern Beaches at North­ern Beaches on Satur­day af­ter­noon while Di­vi­sion 4 plays Mackay at Proser­pine. In round two, Di­vi­sion 1 plays Mackay at home with Di­vi­sion 4 play­ing North­ern Beaches at North­ern Beaches. Good luck and good bowls to all play­ers.

The se­lec­tors have picked the teams to com­pete in round 1 and 2 of the pen­nants to play this weekend.

Di­vi­sion 1 will see Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kin­n­ear, Barry Saroglia, Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamil­ton, Graeme Kin­n­ear, Michael Kin­n­ear, Wayne Han­d­ley, John Bye, Gavin Milne and Shane Spann play­ing.

Di­vi­sion 4 in­cludes Martin Corr, Dale Haack, Barry Zill­man, Shane Kin­n­ear, Phil Brown, Matthew Camm, Dean Love­lock, Todd Mar­shall

John Hen­der­son, Rob­bie Tay­lor, Kevin Thoro­good and Vince Olsen.

Re­serves in­clude Jim Quod, Steve Lau­rie, Todd Leys, Dan Robin­son, Sandy Daf­fara, Ted Cullen, Ross Reville, Shane May, Arthur Wil­liams, John Lah­ney and Reg Rus­sell.

The bus will not be ready for this weekend, so all play­ers should make their own ar­rang­ments to get to Mackay.

LADIES Wed­nes­day saw the start of the club cham­pi­onship pairs com­pe­ti­tion. Janet Mor­timer and Lois Read de­feated Joyce Pat­ullo and Joy Jef­fries 27-18 in a game that was closely con­tested. June Blair and Heather Brown de­feated Flo O’Hanlon and Heather Pat­ullo 41-5. Blair and Brown got off to a fly­ing start, not al­low­ing O’Hanlon and Pat­ullo to get the length of green or to set­tle into their rhythm.

In so­cial play Norma Daniels, Dot Hin­schen and Lil­lian Har­ris de­feated May Davy, Trudy Hanne, Arthur Wil­liams and Gail Camm 20-17 and Pauline Spruce, Fran Porter, Jo Peasley and Bar­bara Dam­mash de­feated Dar­rell Pat­ullo, Cathy Holmes, John Lah­ney and Ma­ree Daf­fara 17-14.

Yes­ter­day, saw Jo Peasley and Joan McGrath play Car­lie Al­bert­son and Ma­ree Daf­fara in a game of club cham­pi­onship pairs and Amy Hart played Lois Read, marker Bar­bara Dam­mash and Janet Mor­timer against Joy Jef­fries, marker Dot Hin­schen in the club cham­pi­onship sin­gles.

Next week on Wed­nes­day, April 16 will be the fi­nal of the club cham­pi­onship fours. Janet Mor­timer, Fran Porter, June Blair and Heather Brown will play Jo Peasley, Flo O’Hanlon, Lois Read and Joan McGrath. The fol­low­ing Wed­nes­day will be the sec­ond semi-fi­nal of the club cham­pi­onship pairs, which will see the win­ner of the Joan McGrath/ Ma­ree Daf­fara game against Janet Mor­timer and Lois Read.

The next com­mit­tee meet­ing is Mon­day, April 14 at 2pm.
