Reef a new destination for the perfect wedding
DESTINATION weddings are being taken to the extreme with couples now able to marry on the Great Barrier Reef.
Mackay couple Samara Whalley and Adam Lownds enjoyed a mock wedding on Thursday at the Reefworld pontoon on the Great Barrier Reef.
The couple were chosen as the bride and groom for the launch of the latest Cruise Whitsundays product – Weddings on the Great Barrier Reef.
The couple were very excited to be chosen to launch the destination wedding idea and enjoyed their ceremony and celebration under perfect blue skies.
“It was just a spectacular day,” Ms Whalley said. “It was awesome. We loved it.” About 30 tourism industry and media representatives travelled to the reef to witness the wedding of the couple who have been together about 11 years.
Whitsunday celebrant Jessica Stafford performed the ceremony.
Couples can now enjoy their wedding and reception on the pontoon and can even spend their wedding night in the King Suite.
Airlie Beach couple Clayton Wong and Cynthia Lam, who are originally from Hong Kong, also posed as bride and groom on the day with the photos to be used by Cruise Whitsundays to promote the idea to the Asian market.
The permanently moored Reefworld pontoon is 40 nautical miles from the Whitsunday Coast mainland, at Hardy Reef, just near world famous Heart Reef. Cruise Whitsundays chief executive officer Nick Hortle said he anticipated the pontoon becoming one of Australia’s most sought after event venues. Sales manager for Cruise Whitsundays Jacky Fleming said it was wonderful to launch this exciting new product where couples could be married in such a unique location.
“The packages include the boat trip, use of the pontoon, decorations, a reef sleep package and a flight for the bride and groom over Heart Reef,“Ms Fleming said.
Cruise Whitsundays can also organise other components including marriage celebrants, music and catering.
