New sugar proposal presented to growers

Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY BUSINESS -

WILMAR Sugar Australia has started presenting cane growers with a new partnership proposal following the announcement of its decision to exit the arrangements with Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL).

The partnership is based on a new joint marketing company (JMC), designed to have equal numbers of board seats for growers and Wilmar.

The board will appoint a CEO to oversee raw sugar marketing by Wilmar Sugar Trading (WST). The CEO will also co-ordinate storage and handling, manage sugar pricing and pools and administer grower payments.

Wilmar’s executive general manager for North Queensland, John Pratt, said through the JMC, growers would see the actual market returns on sugar sales and be confident that these were being passed to them directly.

Wilmar started presenting the marketing partnership to larger growers last week and will continue to hold meetings with the boards of the grower collectives from mid-April. Grower consultation sessions will be held in each region in late April and early May.
