Registrations building for 2014 running festival
THE Whitsunday Running Club is preparing for the second annual Cruise Whitsundays Airlie Beach Running Festival to be held on July 20.
Whitsundays Running Club president Wendy Downes said early registration have been flowing in via the club’s website.
“Early registration allows all competitors and their families to plan for this event and their visit to the Whitsundays,” she said.
Following the huge success of the 2013 event, local tour and ferry operator Cruise Whitsundays has come on board as the major sponsor and together with other local business sponsors, will be working with Whitsunday Running Club to achieve an even better outcome for the region.
Cruise Whitsundays managing director Chris Jacobs confirmed that Cruise Whitsundays had entered a team into the event, saying “even though our logo is a turtle, we will not be slow”.
“Cruise Whitsundays is a proud sponsor and I am happy that we are able to showcase the new Cruise Whitsundays terminal at the Port of Airlie as part of the event course,” he said.
This year’s event includes the signature event Half Marathon 21.1km, the Port of Airlie 10km and the Balance Podiatry 5km with a scenic course taking in the beauty of Airlie Beach and surrounds.
A three person relay team category has been incorporated into the Half Marathon, plus a 5km Corporate Team Challenge and fancy dress is optional.
The Half Marathon is race three of five in the Athletics north Queensland Half Marathon, with race one in Ayr, race two in Mackay, race four in Townsville and race five in Cairns.
Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) chief executive officer Danial Rochford is thrilled to see the successful event enter its second year.
“WMDL has been working with the event managers to take the event to the next level, as part of WMDL’s Events Innovation Strategy for the Whitsundays region,” Mr Rochford said.
“The 2013 event was a huge success and has attracted many competitors, spectators, their families and friends from across the region, interstate and from all over Australia.”
Multi-award winning local travel agent Airliebeach.com has also partnered with the Whitsunday Running Club to offer event holiday packages for competitors.
The 2014 event will proudly support local not-for-profit environmental organization Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc.
