Harrison and Herweg take out Easter Ambrose

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

A STRONG field of 30 golfers played a two ball Ambrose stroke competition last Sunday where each team member had to use nine drives each.

The front 9 was played twice to make up the 18 holes and some exceptional shots were played on the day.

The front 9 holes had recovered remarkably well after Cyclone Ita and the ground staff and volunteers are to be commended on their hard work to open the course for the Easter break.

The two-ball Ambrose is always a popular event and players never shy away from showing their competitive streaks on the course.

Players made the most of the beautiful sunny conditions and found it hard to believe that only a week ago the course had been underwater due to the heavy rain and winds of Cyclone Ita.

Geoff Harrison and Wilf Herweg were the overall win- ners on the day with a nett score of 65 ¾.

They were followed by runners-up Mark Nicoll and Mick Caton with a nett 69 ¼ , on a countback from Scott and Linda Wardroper.

Longest drives in the men’s A grade went to Kym Hall, with David Hoy taking out the men’s B grade.

In the ladies A grade the longest drive went to Anna Winterbourn and in the B grade Jacqui Wall.

Harrison and Herweg cleaned out the men’s competition nearest-the-pins with their second shot on 2 and first shot on 9.

Nearest-the-pins for the ladies was Tiina Randmae with her second shot on hole 2, and Anna Winterbourn with her second shot on 9.

Next Sunday will be a monthly medal with tee off at 7.30am.

If there is a countback, the player wearing a club shirt will win.

EVENT WINNERS: Two-ball ambrose overall winners Wilf Herweg and Geoff Harrison, with Scott and Linda Wardroper who finished in a tie for second with Mick Caton and Paul Nicol (standing in for Mark Nicol) at the Reef Gateway on Sunday.
