Murray wins five-set squash thriller
NICKI Murray has won a thrilling fiveset ladies squash encounter to highlight this week’s round of play.
Murray and opponent Jenny Moranino were tied at 2-2 after four games, before the former triumphed in the deciding set to win 9-7.
The final score read 3/37 to 2/31 in Murray’s favour to claim the game of the week on Tuesday.
In other results between Team 2 and 3, Robyn Heiniger defeated Lauren Payne, filling in for Brenda Cowan, 3/27 to 0/10.
Margaret McPherson took four games to beat opponent Judy Hughes, winning 3/33 to 1/23 while Lauren Panye 3/27 won on a forfeit. Aimee Mitchell and Belinda Faust won their respective matches with relative ease, with Mitchell defeating Bec Smith 3/28 to 0/15.
Alex Ogilvie-Knight put up a determined effort against Faust, but the result would ultimately go against her 3/28 to 0/ 20.
Fixtures between Team 1 and Team 4 were highlighted by a marathon clash between Debbie Brown and Di Law.
Brown ultimately won the tense encounter, prevailing 3/38 to 2/33 in what was a fantastic endorsement for the game.
Julie Mitchell replaced Sandra Watson with success, defeating Lucy Pepper 3/33 to 1/23 while Marj Maloney 3/27 won on forfeit. Robyn Nixon and Lyn Muller didn’t give up a game in their respective matches, with the former triumphing 3/ 29 to 0/18 over Di O’Donnell.
Joy Vitanza tried valiantly against Muller, but would ultimately succumb 3/ 27 to 0/7.
Catherine Mau rounded out the week’s play with a 3/35 to 1/19 victory over Tiani Pauly. Next week Team 2 has smoko while Team 3 and Team 4 face-off in an epic clash. The round of play concludes with Team 1 and Team 2 going toe-to-toe.
