New support group
A NEW support group has been formed in the Whitsundays for anyone who is looking after someone with Dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Whitsunday Dementia Carers Support Network is for like-minded carers where they can meet for informal meetings and share coping techniques and strategies.
Whitsunday local Kristie Barrett was inspired to create the group after both her grandparents were diagnosed with stage one Alzheimer’s.
Ms Barrett’s grandmother Barbara Batty has been dealing with the disease for the past 10 years and her grandfather was diagnosed earlier this year.
Ms Barrett was living in Melbourne when she first noticed the toll her grandmother’s battle had taken on her parents.
“I saw the impact it was having on my parents from afar and it was one of the reasons I moved back,” she said.
Ms Barrett’s long term goals are to increase the education and awareness of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the Whitsunday region with guest speakers and information sessions.
The first meeting for Whitsunday Dementia Carers Support Network will be on August 23 at Coffee Club at 10am.
