Guests travel from overseas for Whitsunday wedding
SATURDAY, August 2, marked the much-anticipated wedding between long-term locals and Whitsunday Sailing Club stalwarts George Canfield and Zoe Ross (formerly Weinstein).
Guests came from far and wide for the event, flying in from the US and UK, as well as states around Australia. Many sailed in from different ports, including Cannonvale, as George mentioned in his speech.
The ceremony was held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s wedding pavilion and presided over by local celebrant Donna Fornasiero, who performed what guests described as a beautiful, intimate and personalised ceremony. The official proceedings culminated in a wine ceremony, signifying the union of lives and love.
Zoe stunned the guests in an elegant ivory wedding dress and was supported by her three daughters and best friend, all dressed in gorgeous kaftans designed and made by fellow local Jo Smerdon. Zoe’s two granddaughters were flower girls, complimented by Zavier Sievers as page boy. Zoe was escorted up the aisle by her father and son.
The couple’s exchanging of rings held one of the many twists to the day, with Zoe removing a bandage from George’s ring finger to reveal a tattooed Turks head wedding band and his commitment to her.
Rather than a traditional reception, guests were invited to celebrate the couple’s happiness with drinks at the Sailing Club’s function area, which had been beautifully decorated by the staff.
The only speech was made by the groom, celebrating his love of Zoe, who in return bought a few tears to eyes as she sang “All My Days” to her new husband, fulfilling a long time promise to him.
Airlie and Jonny G entertained guests throughout the night, who were also treated to the spectacular skills of the local fire dance troupe.
Guest and long-term friend Tania Watson said it was a perfect day for a couple devoted to one another “and a night to celebrate happy times and the future of two much-loved people”.
