Celebratory end to sunset race

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

THE Abell Point Yacht Club (APYC) held its third race in the newly launched Sunset Series on Friday afternoon.

APYC rear offshore commodore Tim Osborne said conditions on the water were light and variable for the start, with the breeze dropping out to nearly nothing by the end of the race.

Peter Millar on Quickskips, took out line honours and first place, managing to get over the finish line just as the wind died.

“The rest of the fleet then struggled to make the finish, relying more on tide to get them home than any thing else,” Mr Osborne said.

Second place went to Jeff Shipsey on Sunrise, with third place won by Chris Chengody on Sandpiper. The remaining places were taken by Fallen Angles in fourth, Rising Farrst in fifth and Fargo in sixth place.

Each yacht finishing was greeted by loud cheers from the crowd, who had gathered to celebrate the re-opening of Sorrento’s bar and restaurant on Friday night.

Mr Osborne thanked the volunteers who assisted in setting and removing the course marks and reminded participants that the club will not be holding racing for the next two weeks due to Airlie Beach Race Week.
