Mountain bike riders scale the heights
WHITSUNDAY Mountain Bike Club members have taken on the third and final round of the Rockwheelers Gravity Enduro.
The three-race series, held over four months, saw riders from Atherton to Airlie Beach contest a physically and technically challenging course.
It took competitors nearly 2.5 hours to complete the 21km downhill track, with Whitsunday trio Michael Sor- ley, Jamie Jochheim and Ben Rowe crossing in a tight finish - just one second separated the former and the latter.
Overall, all three riders managed to finish in the top 10, with Jochheim collecting third ahead of Rowe (fourth), Sorley (seventh), Mark Bennett in eighth and Dan Agresta in 10th.
Local Sam Sorley also tasted success in the women’s field, taking out gold.
The club’s cross country riders chose the southern route at the weekend, travelling to Eungella for the Mackay Mountain Marathon.
Five riders took part in the 38km sport course, with Darren Simmonds (2.51 hours), Andy Polson (3.02), Jason Whitham (3.08), Tony Hadley (3.22) and Leigh Smith (3.48) all impressing.
If that wasn’t enough to keep members happy, a contingent of six riders took part in the 80km marathon course, featuring more than 2000m of vertical climbing.
Justin Lyons finished strongly to clock 5.02 hours while Chris Labes proved the fastest female with 5.13.
Married couple Brian and Anne-Marie Kehres also survived the daring race, as did Dave Morris and Charlie Wilkie.
TRIFECTA: Jamie Jochheim (third), Joshua Clauss (first) and Chris Olsen (second) excelled at the Rockwheelers Gravity Enduro at the weekend.
VICTORIOUS: Sam Sorley won the Gravity Enduro women's race at the weekend.
