Woman steals donated goods

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A WOMAN involved in the theft of donated goods was fined $550 after pleading guilty to the charge in the Proserpine Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Elaine Jill Mercer was the driver of a car that pulled into the Cannonvale-based Whitsunday Community Services at 3.45pm on June 9.

CCTV footage from the premises showed a number of household items being loaded into her vehicle from the donation section at the front of the business.

Items taken included a large blue and white esky, a toaster and saucepans.

Police traced the vehicle’s registration to Mercer and executed a search warrant at the 62-yearold’s home on July 8, where many of the items were found.

Duty lawyer Antoinette Morton said Mercer had gone to the centre to drop goods off and had no idea that by taking other items she was actually stealing.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist conceded that the lack of any criminal history at Mercer’s age, meant this was somewhat “out of character”.
