Playground to be removed from Island Dr roundabout

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE playground at Cannonvale’s Island Drive roundabout will soon be removed after Whitsunday Regional Council voted in accordance with the recommendation of its planning department this week.

Councillors were advised that the playground was “problematic” under the current Austroads Design Guide, as well as the Transport Operations Act.

The report presented at Council’s or- dinary meeting on Tuesday said under the Transport Operations Act, vehicles on circulating paths and exiting roundabouts did not have to give way to pedestrians, therefore any direct pedestrian crossing point at the roundabout would expose those on foot to more traffic than recommended.

“It is therefore recommended that the play park be removed and [the area] be fenced off to prevent pedestrians from crossing the road to the roundabout,” the report read. Councillors were also advised that should they chose to vote against this recommendation, “they take full liability for the decision” and could be held personally responsible in the event of litigation.

It was agreed that the majority of the play equipment would be relocated to other sites and the recommendation was unanimously passed.
