Student designers excel
STUDENT designers from the Whitsundays have again excelled at the annual Mackay Student Festival of Fashion, held on Saturday, August 9, at the Mackay Entertainment Centre.
The event attracted an appreciative audience who were impressed by the high standard of designs by students from a number of Queensland secondary schools, from as far afield as Cairns.
The three judges, Jason Chetcuti, Sofie Buchholz and Melissa Broadhurst, all wellknown art and design professionals, were lavish with their praise.
Judging took place over nine diverse categories including: wearable art, fashion design and fashion illustration.
Wearable Art was a favourite with locals, with nine of the 14 entries in the ‘out-rageous’ category coming from the Whitsundays.
Tori Paterson from St.Catherine’s Catholic College won first prize with her innovative and thought-provoking garment representing the battle of global warming.
She was joined on stage by her fellow St. Catherine’s students Nakita Jepsen, Jasmin Tickle, Latisha Patullo, Kloee Kendall, Macy Fenech-Brebner, Olivia Romanella, Gail Urbano and Whitsunday Christian College’s Isabella Burnup. Adrian Vowles of St. Catherine’s earned a “judges’ special mention” for his spectacular mask constructed from recycled aluminium cans. Fashion illustration was also a popular category, with Whitsunday students vying for design scholarships, sponsored by the prestigious Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia.
Laura Hurren from Proserpine State High School won the senior award and Kloee Kendall from St Catherine’s won the junior award.
Isabella Demartini, a Whitsunday born and raised student now living in Cairns, wowed the judges with her five-garment beach and resort wear entry, modelled by herself and four student friends. Her garments have earned her state-wide success in the Natural Fibres Competition, winning entry to the state final at the Cairns Show and achieving two awards at The EKKA - a first in casual/active wear and a third in wearable art.
