Locals in form for state titles
KARTERS from clubs in the Whitsundays, Mackay, Toowoomba and Ipswich hit the raceway on Sunday for the Whitsunday Motosports Club’s official race day.
Saturday was the official practice day and the cool and rainy weather provided a rare opportunity for local and visiting karters to hone their wet weather racing skills.
Sunday produced better racing conditions and the day consisted of two heats, a final and grand final in the rookies, cadets, junior national light, sportsman light and sportsman heavy divisions, each race containing 16 laps.
Kelsey Creek’s 13-year-old Nathan Hadlow excelled in his junior national light category.
For many karters the weekend served as practice for the upcoming Queensland Closed Kart Championships in Emerald next month.
Whitsunday member Dale McDonnell, who placed second in last month’s Queensland Open Kart Championships, is eyeing off gold in next month’s state titles.
McDonnell used Sunday’s race to get his Arrow kart ready for some fierce racing.
He spent the day trailing and tuning his leopard Yamaha engine, an engine he has never raced with before, but hopes it will get him over the line at next month’s championships.
“For now I’m practising and racing here whenever I can and [I’m] just focusing on getting myself comfortable with this engine and drive combination,” he said.
The Whitsunday Motosports Club’s official day of racing is open to any karters in Australia and is hosted by the club up to 10 times a year.
In other news, the Whitsunday Motosports Club is gearing up for the Club Championships this weekend.
The Whitsunday Raceway will host the event, with riders from Townsville and Mackay set to compete in round two of the four round series. For a list of events visit the Whitsunday Motosports Club’s website at www.wmsc.org.au.
