Whitsunday Regional Council is selling 19 blocks of land in order to reduce the council’s $73 million debt. What are your views?
Maureen Parker, Cannonvale: If it helps keep our rates down, why not? If they have to sell it to get the money, why not? What else would they do with the land? Better than it being vacant. Steve Brooks, Cannon Valley: They are driving down the commercial value of the area because they're selling them at such a cheap rate. Charlotte Boyle, Cannonvale: I have mixed views on the topic. It's great that council is trying to get out of debt, but at what price? If it's going to wreck other people selling their land, or overdevelop the area, then I don't agree. Stuart Ballinger, Cannonvale: I suppose if you're in debt you want to get out of it. Pay as soon as possible. Helen Pike, Cannonvale: Well they want to recover their debt somehow and I don't want to be paying a levy on my rates forever. Trish Large, Proserpine: They're in trouble instead of increasing rates and putting more financial pressure on families and businesses, they've thought of another solution. If it's going to be for the betterment of the community, I'm all for it. Ian Dadd, Perth: I think it's a great idea, why not? If they're going to get rid of their debt, then that's okay. Just don't make a habit of it.
