Man sent to prison for sharing images of child pornography

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A CANNONVALE man who trawled the internet has been jailed for two years and six months after being arrested with 24,700 images of child pornography stored on his home computer.

The District Court in Mackay heard Glenn Bernard Gustke had been “drowning” in images sourced online and the consequences led to a “catastrophic fallout” in his life, destroying his marriage.

Gustke, 53, pleaded guilty to dis- tributing child exploitation material at Cannonvale between May 2013 and January 27 this year and to possession of child exploitation material. Kylie Heath, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, said specialist police, investigating a file sharing tool used to share online child pornography, identified Gustke’s computer after police software “interrogated” his files.

His seized computer revealed 24,700 images and 18 movies classi- fied as being in the lower category one. A much smaller amount of material was found in the two worst categories.

Ms Heath said the case was further aggravated because Gustke was deliberately sharing some of the child pornography.

Defence counsel Bronwyn Hartigan said Gustke spent most of his time as a “house husband” but became bored and began collecting a massive amount of pornography, de- scribing it as addictive.

“He was drowning in what he could get on the internet ... the fallout of these offences has been catastrophic for him,” she said.

Judge Stuart Durward SC said, “these offences are not victimless crimes. The community denounces this conduct”.

Gustke will be eligible for release after serving eight months with the remainder of his sentence suspended for three years.
