Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A WHITSUNDAY businessman who has been operating a tourist business in the main street of Airlie Beach for more than 20 years has taken over the reins as president of the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Tony Laurent from Air was elected at the chamber’s annual general meeting on Tuesday night.

He took over from Philip Larsson who has been acting in the role for several months since the resignation of former president Heidi Ward.

Mr Laurent said he was determined for the chamber to go onwards and upwards and that he would be visiting businesses to get their thoughts and feedback.

The vice-president is Mark Beale and the secretary is Megan Taylor.

Mr Beale said it was important that the chamber was not seen as an organisation only for main street retailers.

He said it was an all-inclusive chamber which included retailers, tradespeople and professionals in Cannonvale and other surrounding areas.

About 20 people attended the meeting and there were six nominations for the seven vacant positions.

The other committee members are Philip Larsson, Jimmy Duncan and John Harker.

The position of treasurer is currently vacant.
