Lovelock goes down fight­ing in Sa­rina

DOWN in Sa­rina, Dean Lovelock had the luck to draw Alan Howard from Souths Subur­ban in the first round of the Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons’ sin­gles.

Not at all fazed by this, Lovelock pro­ceeded to play a game that, ac­cord­ing to those from Sa­rina watch­ing, was a game of great skill.

Howard ended up de­feat­ing Lovelock 25-20 be­fore go­ing on to de­feat Nathan Har­riott (Air­lie Beach) 25-14; Kerry Ol­lett (Mar­ian) 25-23 be­fore fi­nally be­ing de­feated by Tony Con­nor (Mackay) 25-10.

Lovelock is still to con­test the district Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons’ “B” sin­gles at North Mackay on Satur­day, Septem­ber 20.

On Satur­day morn­ing there was a round of the Club Cham­pi­onship Triples played.

Shane May, Dan Robin­son and Wayne Han­d­ley de­feated Matthew Camm, Michael Kin­n­ear and Barry Saroglia 21-9.

The af­ter­noon saw the first semi­fi­nal of the Club Cham­pi­onship Triples con­tested, with Shane May, Dan Robin­son and Wayne Han­d­ley pre­vail­ing over Martin Corr, Brian Pearce and Jonathan Bye 22-14.

Sun­day af­ter­noon pro­duced a solid round of so­cial bowls.

Jeanette Cal­way, Noelie Dibben and Kevin Thoro­good marginally de­feated Car­lie Al­bert­son, Al­bert Reeves (En­ga­dine), Rob Tay­lor and Pep­per Evans (Coon­abarabran) 2019; Fran Porter, John Dam­mash, Phillip Brown and Joy Jef­fries ac­counted for Jed Gough, John Hen­der­son, Flo O’Han­lon and Dot Hin­schen 25-14; John Lah­ney, Lee Reeves (En­ga­dine) and Reg Rus­sell took the points over Kevin Duell, Norma Daniels and Barry Zill­mann 25-11.

The Sun­day tro­phy went to Reg Rus­sell’s team.

The com­pe­ti­tion draw for this week­end in­cludes: the sec­ond semi­fi­nal of the Club Cham­pi­onship Triples between Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamil­ton, Gra­hame Kin­n­ear, Dean Lovelock, Scott Kin­n­ear and Ben Cutrone.

On Sun­day there will be a mixed pairs game between John Lah­ney, Ma­ree Daf­fara, Dot Hin­schen and Barry Saroglia; and the first mixed semi-fi­nal will see Noelie Dibben, Fran Porter, John Hen­der­son and Ross Reville take on Philip Brown, Heather Pat­ullo, Heather Brown and Wayne Han­d­ley.


Some great so­cial bowls were played at the Proser­pine Bowls Club last Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon, led by Dell McCor­mack, John Dam­mash and Ma­ree Daf­fara who de­feated Cathy Holmes, Pep­per Evans and Joy Jef­fries 22-18.

John Lah­ney and June Blair took down Fran Porter and Bar­bara Dam­mash 28-21 while Norma Daniels, Flo O’Han­lon and Heather Pat­ullo cracked Betty Evans, Joyce Pat­ullo and Gail Camm 22-18.

The sec­ond semi-fi­nal of the Club Cham­pi­onship Triples was played on Sun­day af­ter­noon, with Janet Mor­timer, Lil­lian Har­ris and Heather Brown over­com­ing a slow start to de­feat Lois Read, Bar­bara Dam­mash and Ma­ree Daf­fara 21-19.

To­day a cheer squad will travel to North­ern Beaches to sup­port June Blair who will con­test the Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons sin­gles while Norma Daniels will take on the Cham­pion of Cham­pi­ons’ B Sin­gles.

Norma Daniels will play Souths Subur­ban’s cham­pion while June Blair faces St He­len’s top dog at 1pm.

The semi-fi­nals and fi­nals will be played to­mor­row.

Teams have been se­lected for the Sy­mons Shield held at North­ern Beaches on Tues­day, Septem­ber 9.

The shield is played as a side with three teams of triples.

Norma Daniels, June Blair, Joan McGrath; Janet Mor­timer, Heather Pat­ullo and Ma­ree Daf­fara; Lois Read, Joy Jef­fries and Heather Brown make up the teams.

Proser­pine has drawn a bye in the first round and will play ei­ther Sa­rina or Mar­ian at 1pm.

Proser­pine’s pres­i­dent’s at home day is also fast ap­proach­ing (Septem­ber 3).
