Lovelock goes down fighting in Sarina
DOWN in Sarina, Dean Lovelock had the luck to draw Alan Howard from Souths Suburban in the first round of the Champion of Champions’ singles.
Not at all fazed by this, Lovelock proceeded to play a game that, according to those from Sarina watching, was a game of great skill.
Howard ended up defeating Lovelock 25-20 before going on to defeat Nathan Harriott (Airlie Beach) 25-14; Kerry Ollett (Marian) 25-23 before finally being defeated by Tony Connor (Mackay) 25-10.
Lovelock is still to contest the district Champion of Champions’ “B” singles at North Mackay on Saturday, September 20.
On Saturday morning there was a round of the Club Championship Triples played.
Shane May, Dan Robinson and Wayne Handley defeated Matthew Camm, Michael Kinnear and Barry Saroglia 21-9.
The afternoon saw the first semifinal of the Club Championship Triples contested, with Shane May, Dan Robinson and Wayne Handley prevailing over Martin Corr, Brian Pearce and Jonathan Bye 22-14.
Sunday afternoon produced a solid round of social bowls.
Jeanette Calway, Noelie Dibben and Kevin Thorogood marginally defeated Carlie Albertson, Albert Reeves (Engadine), Rob Taylor and Pepper Evans (Coonabarabran) 2019; Fran Porter, John Dammash, Phillip Brown and Joy Jeffries accounted for Jed Gough, John Henderson, Flo O’Hanlon and Dot Hinschen 25-14; John Lahney, Lee Reeves (Engadine) and Reg Russell took the points over Kevin Duell, Norma Daniels and Barry Zillmann 25-11.
The Sunday trophy went to Reg Russell’s team.
The competition draw for this weekend includes: the second semifinal of the Club Championship Triples between Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton, Grahame Kinnear, Dean Lovelock, Scott Kinnear and Ben Cutrone.
On Sunday there will be a mixed pairs game between John Lahney, Maree Daffara, Dot Hinschen and Barry Saroglia; and the first mixed semi-final will see Noelie Dibben, Fran Porter, John Henderson and Ross Reville take on Philip Brown, Heather Patullo, Heather Brown and Wayne Handley.
Some great social bowls were played at the Proserpine Bowls Club last Wednesday afternoon, led by Dell McCormack, John Dammash and Maree Daffara who defeated Cathy Holmes, Pepper Evans and Joy Jeffries 22-18.
John Lahney and June Blair took down Fran Porter and Barbara Dammash 28-21 while Norma Daniels, Flo O’Hanlon and Heather Patullo cracked Betty Evans, Joyce Patullo and Gail Camm 22-18.
The second semi-final of the Club Championship Triples was played on Sunday afternoon, with Janet Mortimer, Lillian Harris and Heather Brown overcoming a slow start to defeat Lois Read, Barbara Dammash and Maree Daffara 21-19.
Today a cheer squad will travel to Northern Beaches to support June Blair who will contest the Champion of Champions singles while Norma Daniels will take on the Champion of Champions’ B Singles.
Norma Daniels will play Souths Suburban’s champion while June Blair faces St Helen’s top dog at 1pm.
The semi-finals and finals will be played tomorrow.
Teams have been selected for the Symons Shield held at Northern Beaches on Tuesday, September 9.
The shield is played as a side with three teams of triples.
Norma Daniels, June Blair, Joan McGrath; Janet Mortimer, Heather Patullo and Maree Daffara; Lois Read, Joy Jeffries and Heather Brown make up the teams.
Proserpine has drawn a bye in the first round and will play either Sarina or Marian at 1pm.
Proserpine’s president’s at home day is also fast approaching (September 3).
