Outrig­ger club tastes suc­cess in In­n­is­fail

OUTRIG­GER Whit­sun­day pad­dlers have trav­elled six hours to con­test the Co­conuts Re­gatta in round 5 of the North Queens­land Zone.

The re­gatta, held in In­n­is­fail at the week­end, con­sisted of mul­ti­ple sprint races of 500m, 1000m and 2000m all with turns at the 250m buoy.

Af­ter a morn­ing packed with sprints, con­tes­tants headed to Etty Bay to pad­dle 15km back to the fin­ish line on the John­stone River.

Outrig­ger Whit­sun­day held their own up against strong pad­dlers from Hekili, Cairns, Mis­sion Beach, The Dam and host club Co­conuts.The open men won sil­ver in the 1000m, bronze in the 500m and the open mixed crew also won bronze in the 500m.

Pad­dlers of the day were Nick Bellinger and Blair Mitchell, af­ter com­pet­ing in ev­ery sprint achieved gold in the OC2 open men 15km and were first across the line in 1.12 hours.

Re­nee Martin and Dale Mitchell re­ceived gold in the OC2 open mixed 15km and Mark Bell placed fourth in the OC1 se­nior mas­ter men di­vi­sion.

Outrig­ger Whit­sun­day pres­i­dent Re­nee Martin praised all the crews in­volved.

“This is the first year of pad­dling for most of this crew, with a cou­ple only start­ing three months ago,” she said.

“So to achieve eight out of eight Outrig­ger Whit­sun­day pad­dlers re­ceiv­ing medals for their ef­forts is just fan­tas­tic.” The club will now pre­pare ju­nior pad­dlers for an event on the Sun­shine Coast in Septem­ber and the Club Zone Cham­pi­onships in Oc­to­ber (Mackay).

Outrig­ger Whit­sun­day will hold a bat­tle of the busi­nesses on Satur­day, Septem­ber 13. Any busi­nesses want­ing to build work re­la­tions with their staff are urged to con­tact Re­nee on 0412 448 805.

The club will also host a come and try day on Septem­ber 14.
