Outrigger club tastes success in Innisfail
OUTRIGGER Whitsunday paddlers have travelled six hours to contest the Coconuts Regatta in round 5 of the North Queensland Zone.
The regatta, held in Innisfail at the weekend, consisted of multiple sprint races of 500m, 1000m and 2000m all with turns at the 250m buoy.
After a morning packed with sprints, contestants headed to Etty Bay to paddle 15km back to the finish line on the Johnstone River.
Outrigger Whitsunday held their own up against strong paddlers from Hekili, Cairns, Mission Beach, The Dam and host club Coconuts. The open men won silver in the 1000m, bronze in the 500m and the open mixed crew also won bronze in the 500m.
Paddlers of the day were Nick Bellinger and Blair Mitchell, after competing in every sprint achieved gold in the OC2 open men 15km and were first across the line in 1.12 hours.
Renee Martin and Dale Mitchell received gold in the OC2 open mixed 15km and Mark Bell placed fourth in the OC1 senior master men division.
Outrigger Whitsunday president Renee Martin praised all the crews involved.
“This is the first year of paddling for most of this crew, with a couple only starting three months ago,” she said.
“So to achieve eight out of eight Outrigger Whitsunday paddlers receiving medals for their efforts is just fantastic.” The club will now prepare junior paddlers for an event on the Sunshine Coast in September and the Club Zone Championships in October (Mackay).
Outrigger Whitsunday will hold a battle of the businesses on Saturday, September 13. Any businesses wanting to build work relations with their staff are urged to contact Renee on 0412 448 805.
The club will also host a come and try day on September 14.
