Man on rape charge has been granted bail

BAIL has been granted to a man charged with com­mon as­sault, in­de­cent treat­ment of a child un­der the age of 12 and three counts of rape.

The man was brought to Mon­day’s sit­ting of the Proser­pine Mag­is­trate’s Court in po­lice cus­tody af­ter he was picked up on an ar­rest war­rant.

He is al­leged to have com­mit­ted a com­mon as­sault of­fence on Fe­bru­ary 7, 2012, in Torquay.

Po­lice have also al­leged that he in­de­cently as­saulted a child un­der the age of 12 on an un­known date between De­cem­ber 31, 2008 and Jan­uary 1, 2010. The three rapes are al­leged to have oc­curred on dates between De­cem­ber 31, 2010 and Au­gust 1, 2012.

The of­fender was rep­re­sented in court by duty lawyer An­toinette Mor­ton of Mor­ton Lawyers.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and ap­plied for bail.

His bail ap­pli­ca­tion was suc­cess­ful, sub­ject to res­i­den­tial and travel con­di­tions.

The charges were trans­ferred back to Her­vey Bay, where they will be heard on Oc­to­ber 16.
