Council to push tourism plan

Whitsunday Times - - COMMUNITY NEWS -

WHITSUNDAY Regional Council will meet with Queensland Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey and the chief executive officer of Tourism and Events Queensland following the official adoption of its new destination tourism plan.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said these meetings were to discuss the delivery of the plan and its prioritisation of Council-owned tourism-enabling infrastructure.

Issues identified in the Whitsunday Destination Tourism Plan include regional population growth, optimising the region’s marketing outcomes, deve- loping products and facilities, events development, development of drive tourism and the international access potential of the Whitsunday Coast Airport.

Cr Whitney said Council’s number one priority was the development of the Whitsunday Coast Airport “to ensure access opportunities are grown and international status is achieved”.

“Increased access to the Whitsunday Coast Airport is seen as the key component requirement for tourism industry growth in the Whitsunday region,” she said.

“In addition, the development of an integrated resort development is increasingly important - a development of this magnitude would update the existing tourism product on offer, and also provided much needed construction activity and employment to the region.”

The destination tourism plan will be made available to the public through Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL) by the end of this month.
