Mar­ket­ing ex­ec­u­tive is state fi­nal­ist for tourism award

WHIT­SUN­DAYS Mar­ket­ing and De­vel­op­ment Limited (WMDL) mar­ket­ing ex­ec­u­tive Natas­sia ‘Tash’ Wheeler has been se­lected as Queens­land’s state fi­nal­ist for the 2014 Young Tourism Pro­fes­sion­als Award by the Aus­tralian Re­gional Tourism Net­work (ARTN).

Each year, the ARTN recog­nises young lead­ers who are con­sid­ered key con­trib­u­tors to the de­vel­op­ment of Aus­tralia’s re­gional tourism in­dus­try through the Young Tourism Pro­fes­sion­als Award.

WMDL Chief Ex­ec­u­tive Of­fi­cer Da­nial Rochford said this was “ba­si­cally an emerg­ing lead­ers award” and he con­grat­u­lated Ms Wheeler on the nom­i­na­tion.

“Tash has done an in­cred­i­ble job in pro­mot­ing re­gional tourism in Aus­tralia and since com­menc­ing her role at WMDL has con­tin­u­ously pushed to grow op­por­tu­ni­ties for our lo­cal tourism op­er­a­tors here in the Whit­sun­days,” he said.

“It is clear that Tash has got a strong pas­sion for re­gional tourism and her knowl­edge, com­mit­ment and pas­sion is an ab­so­lute ben­e­fit to WMDL and our lo­cal tourism in­dus­try,”

Ms Wheeler said she was over­whelmed and ex­cited to be se­lected as state fi­nal­ist for the award.

“I am very pas­sion­ate about de­vel­op­ing re­gional tourism op­por­tu­ni­ties, par­tic­u­larly in Queens­land and the an­nounce­ment is a great hon­our,” she said.

Ms Wheeler be­gan her ca­reer in tourism and mar­ket­ing with a trainee­ship in 2005 and has since com­pleted her Diploma in Tourism.

She has worked for sev­eral Re­gional Tourism Or­gan­i­sa­tions (RTO’s) in Queens­land, as well as the state tourism or­gan­i­sa­tion, Tourism and Events Queens­land.

She was also the key driver be­hind a newly formed net­work group, YAH (Young At Heart), aimed at en­hanc­ing de­vel­op­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties for tourism pro­fes­sion­als in the Whit­sun­days re­gion.

The win­ner of the 2014 Young Tourism Pro­fes­sional Award will be an­nounced at the ARTN Con­ven­tion in Port Stephens from Oc­to­ber 20-24.

Ms Wheeler will at­tend the con­ven­tion, where she will present on a topic of her choice and be judged on a num­ber of cri­te­ria.

The win­ner of the award re­ceives a bur­sary for pro­fes­sional de­vel­op­ment, a year’s ac­cess to the ‘My Travel’ re­search data­base and be­comes an ex-of­fi­cio board mem­ber of the ARTN.
