Mitchell goes all hairy to support a special charity
TWENTY-SEVEN-year-old Whitsunday resident Mitchell Blain is not donning a beard for fashion purposes.
Before January 1 this year, the miner said he didn’t even know he could grow a decent amount of facial hair.
Mitchell Blain is growing 365 days of hair as a charity fundraiser for the Mater foundation.
He has named his mission ‘Salute to Seth’ after Seth Xavier Cambridge, a six-week-yearold child he knew, who died from Gastroschisis in 2004.
Ever since Seth’s passing, Mr Blain had been donating $100 to the Mater foundation where Seth received his treatment.
“We have so much technology in today’s world but we couldn’t save him.
“So I decided I need to do something else and when I saw my tattoo I was reminded that it’s been 10 years since Seth passed,” Mr Blain said.
He decided to abstain from drinking and smoking for a year and grow his hair.
“It was only supposed to be the hair on my head then everyone thought I meant my face, I said “nah I can’t grow a beard”,” Mr Blain said.
However, 272 days later and he is sporting a very masculine and impressive beard.
Mr Blain has a Facebook page called ‘Mitch's Hair-raiser. Salute to Seth.’ which has more than 700 likes.
Every day he uploads a ‘selfie’ displaying the length of his hair and people donate money to him.
So far Mr Blain has raised $13,239.40 with the hope of raising $30,000 by the end of the year.
His family are moved by Mr Blain’s commitment to the cause.
He will shave off his hair at a special venue on December 31 with details to be released closer to date.
