Annual fishing fundraiser competition to kick off
PETER Faust Dam will have about 100 fishermen this weekend as the Peter Faust Dam Fish Stocking Association hosts its annual fundraiser.
The Fish Stocking Association started in 1990 in conjunction with the construction of the dam.
It aims to protect and enhance fisheries in the Whitsunday region, promote recreational fishing and ensure anglers have access to fish stocks with angling species in the region.
This year’s tournament will see 50 teams of two anglers hit the water for the catch and release tournament.
Association president Lindsay Dobe said the tournament didn’t only help the association but contributed to the region as well.
“It’s an invitational tournament,” Mr Dobe said.
“We started it 14 years ago. We began it to raise money for fingerlings to stock into the lake. It’s great promotion for the region as it gets a fair bit of attention in magazines. It really keeps the dam on the map.” Mr Dobe said the tournament had an invitational list – competitors stay at the Lion’s Camp Kanga near the dam. “Lots of people really enjoy it,” he said. “It works well having an invitational competition with the accommodation near by.”
The competition starts on Friday and runs through to Saturday.
