Opti sailors shine at Youth Championships
FOUR Whitsunday Optimist sailors travelled to Yeppoon to compete in the 2014 Queensland Youth Championships at the end of last month.
Brothers Aiden and Ty Gummow, were joined by Hamish Swain and Mac Mitchell, with all boys sailing their very best during the weekendlong event.
Conditions were just right for the young Opti sailors who shared their courses with the Sabots.
In what turned into a tight battle, Aiden Gummow won out, claiming first place in the division overall, with Hamish Swain coming third on a count-back.
The regatta was preceded by a three-day training camp, with instruction from top coaches, including former Optimist champion and New Zealand Olympic sailor Susannah Pyatt.
Whitsunday-based sailor Klaus Lorenz took the place of the second Optimist coach.
The entire six days of training and racing was hosted by the Keppel Bay Sailing Club, where a tremendous team of volunteers rolled out the welcome mat.
All of the Whitsunday Optimist sailors are now getting ready for their next big event – the regatta to celebrate 150 years of sailing at the Port Denison Sailing Club in Bowen on November 8-9. The regatta is open to all classes of off beach dinghies and catamarans. For more information contact Scott Gummow on 0418 872 869 or visit www.qld.yachting.org.au.
