Whitsunday golfers ace Maggie Island
EIGHTEEN Whitsunday golfers travelled to Magnetic Island for a feast of golf over the long weekend, contesting a two-ball ambrose on Saturday and a stroke competition on Sunday.
The nine-hole course made for a different scene for the Whitsunday Golf Club, who is usually accustomed to playing at the Proserpine Golf Course.
Kerry Hall and Kym Hill were victorious on day one, producing a nett score of 59.75 to finish ahead of Tessa Aitken and Stan Hoy (60).
Brendan Meharry and Ron Jamieson finished third with 61, while the nearest-the-pins, sponsored by Jamieson, were claimed by Mick Cooper and Ian Giles (no. 2), Wilf Herweg and Tiina Randmae (4) and Kym Hill and Kerry Hall (5 and 6).
Mick Cooper prevailed in the Sunday competition, carding a round of 55 to clear Wilf Herweg (57).
The gross score winner and longest drive went to Brendon Meharry.
Linda Wardroper bested the ladies’ field with 51, while Tessa Aitken finished second with 57.
Anna Winterbourn netted the best gross score and the longest drive.
Nearest-the-pins were claimed by Mick Cooper, Stan Hoy and Penny Wardroper. This Sunday the club will return to the Proserpine course to contest the four-ball championships. Tee-off is at 7.30am.
