Townsville runner claims Bowen Cup
TOWNSVILLE’S Aldren has won this year’s XXXX Gold Bowen Cup in an exhilarating finish.
The four-year-old gelding from John Erichsen’s stables collected $10,400 at the Bowen Turf Club on Saturday, winning the 1810m race by just 0.1 of a length over Mushatta (trained by John Manzelmann).
Coco Dubawi (Bryan Dixon) was just another 0.1 of a length behind, but Aldren and jockey Peter Cullen were the toast of the five race card.
“Even though it was a close race there’s a lot of difference between running second and coming first that makes you try harder,” Cullen said. “I’m very pleased with the outcome. The owners are good friends and that just make you put in 100 per cent.”Cullen said Aldren would go for a spell, but earmarked the Bowen Cup winner for a return next year.
The win was the gelding’s fifth career victory, including two firsts in Townsville just two months ago.
Pre-race favourite Bracko Mick (John Manzelmann) finished fourth after starting the race at $2.80, while Bluey’s Escape ran well from barrier 12 to finish fifth.
Blowin’ Your Mind, King of the Forest, Carbini Coni, Stop Crying and Likefatherlikeson rounded out the field.
WINNERS: Claire Tooth from co-sponsors XXXX Gold, trainers and co-owners Jack and Caroline Erichsen with their horse Aldren, Ryan Langford from co-sponsors Telstra, stable-hand Ray Fitzgerald, and Greg Morianos and Trent Fowler from XXXX Gold during Saturday’s Bowen Cup presentations.
