Lady skippers to reign supreme

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

THIS weekend it’s all about the ladies at the Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) where the Swim Swim Swim Lady Skippers Series will be sailed.

WSC commodore Jim Hayes said the Lady Skippers Series was a stand-out event in the club’s sailing calendar and one that gave some of the great female sailors of the region the recognition they deserved.

“Basically it’s about getting our ladies out there, steering the boats and [being] in charge of the boats and the races,” he said.

The series, which will be sailed on both Saturday, October 18, and Sunday, October 19, features three races, in which competing boats must have a woman at the helm.

Mr Hayes said the series incorporated a mix of races, starting with a short offshore race on the Saturday and finishing with two bay races on the Sunday.

“That’s about making sure there is an opportunity for all potential lady helms-people to go out there and improve their racing skills in a variety of races,” he said.

Saturday’s race starts at 11am with Sunday’s racing kicking off at 1pm.

A skippers’ briefing will be held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club tomorrow (Friday) night, at 7pm.

Mr Hayes said this would be just before the members draw which is now up to $3800. “And you have to be there to win it,” he said. For more information, or to stay up to date with the club’s calendar of racing, visit www.whitsundaysailing
