Woolworths team wins bowls competition
LAST Wednesday night the Airlie Beach Bowls Club crowned the latest winners of the Business House Bowls competition.
Woolworths were presented with the field for series 13 at last week’s presentation, having dominated all comers.
Business House Bowls wrapped-up the series with a boys against girls fixture, with the latter victorious.
The next season of Business House Bowls will start on October 29 – the last for the year.
Men’s play last Wednesday was down on numbers, with just 10 players taking part.
Winners on the day were Allan Leis, Peter Lawton and Keith Beetham, who defeated David Zimmermann, Steve Tattam and Jim Cairns 23-16.
Meanwhile Nik Fairnbach, Eric Bottle and Jack Dobbins edged out John Fornasiero, Col Howes and Herb Secomb 29-27.
Bare Foot Bowls was not played on Friday night, as the Zonta Group took over the Airlie Beach Bowls Club for a fundraiser.
Bare foot play will return this Friday.
On Saturday the club hosted the first round of the Mixed Pair’s championships.
Kevin Jewell and Margo Stanley were victorious over Steve Tattam and Jill Spencer 25-23.
Andrew Bell and Betty Nicolle won comfortably over Ladda Purdie and Bruce Purdie 37-18 while Bob McMahon and Henny Tattam took down Nik Fernbach and Jo Howes 2725.
The second round of the Mixed Pair’s championship was played on Sunday, where Andrew Bell and Betty Nicolle had the last laugh over David Dias and Louise Mahony 20-16.
Kevin Jewell and Margo Stanley were also winners, having defeated Henny Tattam and Bob McMahon 2313.
Sunday social play had 14 bowlers in action, forming one game of triples and two of pairs.
Rick Williams, Maureen Barnard and Jack Dobbins had a big win over Allan Leis, Keith Beetham and Sharon Kendrick 36-12, while Eric Bottle and Bert Eykenboom ousted Peter Lawton and Margaret Heeney 29-17.
Steve Tattam and Jenny Ryder rounded out the day with an exciting draw with Nik Fernbach and Noela Whitehead 23-23.
There was no ladies’ play this week.
