OUTRIGGER

OUTRIGGER Whitsunday has finished top three at the Zone Championships earlier this month.

The club finished third in the North Queensland zone against nine other competing clubs in Mackay.

Conditions proved ideal for paddlers at Harbour Beach a fortnight ago, with success enjoyed among junior and senior ranks.

The club had paddlers in OC6, OC2 and OC1 events, while some senior competitors bravely backed up to perform consecutive events.

The under-16 junior girls claimed silver in the 4km marathon and bronze in the 500m sprint, taking on the well equipped boys of Malanuka.

The club claimed gold in the under-14 2km event, silver in the under-14 OC2 2km race and bronze in the under-16 OC1 4km.

Outrigger Whitsunday president Renee Martin congratulated all the juniors for their efforts, especially those paddling above age.

Senior members achieved bronze in the open men and master women’s 500m sprints, while Dale Mitchell, in his maiden OC1 race, claimed bronze in the 12km marathon.

OC1 paddlers Nick Bellinger and Blair Mitchell were awarded silver for their efforts.

The regatta finalises the OC6 series for Outrigger Whitsunday in 2014.

Club members will continue training for the Marlin Coast Challenge (42km OC1 and OC2) later this month.
