Tourism Bowen takes four awards

Whitsunday Times - - 2014 WHITSUNDAY TOURISM & BUSINESS AWARDS -

TOURISM Bowen romped home in this year’s Whitsunday Tourism and Business Awards, nabbing four awards over the weekend.

The northern tourism body received the Festivals and Events award for the Heli Taxi’s Superboat Race, the Visitor Information Services award, the Destination Marketing award for ‘MangoGate’, and the board members of Tourism Bowen received the Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer or Group of Volunteers award.

Probably better known as ‘The Big Mango’, Tourism Bowen provides an invaluable service to travellers passing through the Whitsundays. Staffed by four full time employees and volunteers, the centre is a friendly welcoming stop off where tourists can gain knowledgeable information on our region as well as some delicious mango sorbet.

Tourism Bowen’s Heli Taxi’s Superboat Race was an unparalleled success, attracting large crowds and critical acclaim from participants and spectators and ‘MangoGate’, where the Big Mango disappeared in mysterious circumstances, captured headlines around the world for days and delivered unparalleled exposure to Bo- wen. Tourism Bowen CEO Paul McLaughlin said the honours were excellent news.

“It’s recognition of all the hard work that the staff and the crew have put in over the years,” he said.

“This on the back of winning the best information centre in Queensland which we picked up a couple of weeks ago.

“This is just more recognition for Tourism Bowen and the work we do.”

In 2012 Bowen won Queensland’s friendliest town and Mr McLaughlin said the more recent awards showed what a lovely community Bowen was.

He thanked the staff and the volunteer board and the volunteers who worked in the information centre.

“The awards are recognition from outside the region...and this certainly lets the wider Whitsunday region know about Bowen and hopefully it’ll result in more people coming to visit our wonderful beaches and come to see what we have to offer.”

VISITOR INFORMATION SERVICES: Tourism Bowen's Rae Ernst-Kelly, Christin Short and Paul McLaughlin with their Visitor Information Services award.
