Council pleased with airport award
WHITSUNDAY Regional Council is very pleased that the Whitsunday Coast Airport received the Local Government Award for Tourism at the Whitsunday Tourism and Business Awards on Saturday night.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said it capped off a stellar year for the Whitsunday Coast Airport and was an acknowledgment of the tourism services council provided to the local community through the airport.
“Winning this Whitsunday Tourism and Business Award is great recognition for the Whitsunday Coast Airport, with council looking at entering the airport in the Queensland Tourism Awards next year,” she said.
“2013-14 was an exciting year for the Whitsunday Coast Airport with an increase in carriers, flights and passengers; interest in local and international investment expanding and the announcement to commence the process for a designation of a Priority Development Area (PDA) over the airport.
“This year looks like it is shaping up to be even better with the recent announcement of the airport posting the best first quarter result on record with in excess of 72,000 passengers passing through the terminal during July, August and September of 2014.
“The Whitsunday Regional Council as operator of the Whitsunday Coast Airport will continue to work with airlines and investors to expand existing flight routes, add new routes and develop the airport itself, with the aim of upgrading the airport to international status as the Whitsunday Coast International Export Hub.”
