Legacy of their parents continue for 50 years
IN OCTOBER 1964, when Proserpinians Thelma and Bob Filby were approached to take on the Toyota commercial franchise, they never envisioned the dealership would reach 50 years of business.
The dealership currently sees all four children, Robert, Judy, Karen and Brian, in managing roles in both Proserpine and Bowen.
In 1951 founder Robert H.H. [Bob] Filby gave up his sugar farming life and bought a general carrying and bus service which he began trading under the name of Filby’s Coaches and General Carrying.
The business continued and together with his wife, they joined forces with the Shell Agency, John Deere Tractors, Chesney Caravans and CIG Franchise, now trading under the name of R.H.H. & T.A Filby together with Filby Coaches.
Current dealer principal and son Robert Filby recalls his parents’ ardour for their work since he was a boy.
Once Thelma and Bob Filby had taken on the franchise, they bought the Main Street premises, where the business still operates from today.
In 1973 the trading name changed to Filby’s Motors.
The Toyota franchise grew rapidly during the 70’s, which resulted in the couple streamlining their business commitments by selling all their other interests and focusing entirely on the franchise.
Current general manager and daughter to Bob and Thelma, Karen Filby remembers their mother’s gracefulness which built the dealership to what it is today.
“Our mother instilled genuine family values in all of us and as a family business that naturally was reflected in how they, and later we, approach the business and our customers,” she said.
All four children credit their parents’ determination and family values in reaching 50 years of business and are proud to say that the third generation of Filby’s, Robert’s daughter Melissa and Brian’s son Josh have jumped on board to continue the family legacy.
