Plenty of inter-unit fun for Navy Cadets
A TOTAL of nine cadets from the local unit NTS Whitsunday travelled to Townsville last weekend for an interunit exchange with cadets from the unit TS Coral Sea.
The cadets and their staff hit the road on Friday afternoon for the long drive to the dedicated TS Coral Sea base, located within the Townsville port.
On Saturday morning, the units were split into two groups with the younger set taking to the waters off The Strand for a sailing exercise.
NTS Whitsunday commanding officer, Sub Lieutenant James Lang, said here the Whitsunday cadets definitely reaped the benefits of their fortnightly sail training in local waters.
“They all came back saying they were the stronger sailors – they do quite a bit more than other units and that was good feedback for us because we focus a lot on on-water activities,” he said. Meanwhile, the older cadets went to Townsville’s Lavarack Barracks for a competitive shoot-out with .22 rifles on the 25-metre rifle range.
Sub Lt Lang said this was “something fairly new” for the Whitsunday cadets, who now had the opportunity to continue travelling to Townsville to further their skills in mastering firearms.
On Saturday night, Navy Cadet uniforms were swapped for ghoulish costumes at a Halloween disco, where great fun was had by all.
The fun continued on the waters of the Ross River the next morning in an inter-unit canoeing exercise.
Sub Lt Lang said this was also another opportunity for the cadets to practise their mid-water transfers from safety boats to canoes.
When the time came to say goodbye on Sunday afternoon there was no doubt some firm friendships had been made.
Navy Cadets from NTS Whitsunday will return to Townsville in about six weeks. In the meantime they will continue to meet on home turf for alternate Friday night parades and Saturday morning on-water activities.
NTS Whitsunday has now raised $4000 of a $30k-plus target, which it’s hoped will fund a dedicated home base. Anyone interested in helping the unit is asked to contact Sub Lt James Lang on 0402 479 483.
