Record entries expected for fishing tournament
ORGANISERS of the Reelax Garmin Whitsunday 2014 Light Tackle Game Fish Tournament are expecting a record number of entries this year. Whitsunday Game Fish Club president Jamie Lovenbury said this year’s tournament was undergoing its final preparations and expected plenty of late comers to sign up at the tournament’s briefing this evening.
“We’ve got a massive number of boats already,” Mr Lovenbury said. “It’s a good sign, because we get a fair few on our briefing night before the tournament (tonight).”
Mr Lovenbury said conditions were favourable for this year’s tournament unlike the blustery winds which caused issues in 2013. He expected the wind to die down before the weekend.
“We’re looking at 10-15 knots on Friday,” Mr Lovenbury said. “With 5-10 this weekend.” Participants will compete in a wide variety of categories including Champion Male Angler, Champion Female Angler, Champion Junior Angler, Champion Boat/Team 7 metres and over, Champion Boat/Team under 7m, First Billfish and Last Billfish tagged/deemed caught and the Encouragement Award.
Any last minute entries must be done in person at the briefing at the Voluntary Marine Rescue Club (VMR), Cannonvale tonight – registrations close at 6.30pm.
Phone Jamie Lovenbury for any further enquiries on 0428 834 872. Fishing will commence on Friday at 7am.
Presentations will be held on Sunday from 5pm at the VMR.
SUPER JUNIORS: Some of last year's junior anglers Matthew Vessey, Reece Beutel, Dayle Johnson, Jayke Johnson, Angus Johnson, Kynan Beutel, Daniel Gerhart and Jackson Green kitted out for the tournament.
