Athletics club to close season
ABUMPER season for the Whitsunday Athletics Club will finish with a splash this weekend.
Members will head to Hamilton Island on Sunday for the club’s end-of-season function.
Commonwealth Games high jumper Brandon Starc will also attend, hosting a clinic with athletes and coaches before presentations.
It has been a highly successful season for the club, with a significant increase in the number and retention of junior athletes in both programs.
The Hamilton Island branch had a record 52 athletes in just its third year, while the traditional home base at Proserpine arrested the downward spiral of recent times, with a strong emphasis on fun and participation, ensuring all the athletes enjoyed their weekly club meets.
Younger members in particular were catered for, utilising the new International Association of Athletics Foundation ‘Kids Athletics’ program.
Athletes not only did the traditional track and field events, but a number of games that emphasised the key movements that underpin the events.
Whitsunday Athletics Club vice-president Steve Jackson said Starc was the perfect example of what can be generated by such focus.
“Brandon started out in Little Athlet- ics, following his older siblings into the sport,” Jackson said.
“He enjoyed the sport and as he developed, decided to focus on high jump and is now achieving great results – but it all started out having fun with his friends.”
Whitsunday Athletics Club president Nathan Sainsbury said he was looking to finish the season in style this weekend.
“It’s been such a great season with strong numbers and success for our athletes, coaches and officials,” he said.
“It is fantastic to have a fitting finale to recognise and acknowledge our high achievers and hard workers.”
